Veteran actor Shabana Azmi has appealed to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to end his indefinite hunger strike, saying the country needs people like him to continue speaking against injustice. In a message shared on Instagram, Azmi praised Wangchuk’s commitment to truth and urged him to take care of his health so that he can continue guiding young people.
Her message comes at a time when Wangchuk’s ongoing protest has drawn nationwide attention and support from several public figures.

“The country needs people like you”
In her Instagram post, Azmi expressed admiration for Wangchuk’s efforts and said the nation was proud of him.
She wrote, “Dear Sonam Wangchuk, our country needs people like you. You are standing against injustice, you are standing for the truth, and we are proud of you.”
The actor acknowledged his determination but stressed that his health should not be sacrificed in the process.
Appeal to end the indefinite fast
Azmi requested Wangchuk to end his hunger strike, saying his role as a mentor is valuable for students across the country.
She said that his guidance gives courage and hope to young people and that they need his continued support. According to Azmi, the movement he is leading is a long one, making it even more important for him to remain healthy.
Celebrities extend support
Shabana Azmi is not the only public figure to speak out. In recent days, several actors and celebrities have supported Wangchuk’s cause while also requesting him to call off his fast.
Among those who have voiced support are Zeenat Aman, Abhay Deol, Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Omi Vaidya and Rubina Dilaik. While backing the demands of the protest, they have also expressed concern over Wangchuk’s health and well-being.
Protest continues in Delhi
The protest began in Delhi on June 20 and has since gathered support from members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) as well as several political leaders. Wangchuk joined the indefinite hunger strike on June 28, intensifying the movement.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
They have also sought financial assistance of Rs 1 crore for the families of students who allegedly died by suicide following the reported NEET paper leak controversy.
The protest is expected to continue in the coming days. Organisers have announced a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20, which coincides with the opening day of the Monsoon Session.
